The Little Housecoat that Could

On my first visit to Goodwill to buy materials for the show, I found a vintage housecoat—floral and very colorful. I knew I wanted to do something with it. It is now part of a lovely top. The housecoat provided only enough fabric for the front of the top, so I had to figure out what to use for the back. The solution? A pink with white polka dots bed sheet, which I found on that same shopping trip. I love how the “limitation” of not having enough fabric from the housecoat led to the creation of a piece I [...]

DIY – {re}crafting made easy

By Carrie Coyle It is seriously crunch time!  I thought for a second about posting pictures of me working away on my items, but then I thought twice about posting pictures of myself at 1 in the morning in the awful looking garb that I call my “work clothes”, that is just not a pleasant site.  Sooo, I thought I would show you in a separate segment how I went about creating one of the items that will be showcased in my collection, and teach you how to easily do it yourself-yes, friends, DIY! I am so excited to be working with Goodwill and their sponsor The News and Record. Goodwill has asked us designers to create one look entirely out of paper! I’ve never worked with paper before but after some research I was pleased to find that working with paper is remarkably similar to working with fabric. Not only am I using paper to create a garment, I’ve used paper to create a wig! In this blog I wanted to give you a little DIY project that is super easy and fun. It’s also very customizable. I was inspired to create a [...]

Have you bought your ticket yet??

Designer - April Morgan With five weeks to go before the show, I am busy working on my fifth outfit and scheduling fittings with the lovely ladies who will model my outfits.  When I first learned of the show back in the fall, the thought of creating seven outfits in three months (that spanned the holidays, no less) seemed quite a challenge.  However, preparing for the show has shown me how creative and productive I can be outside of my 9 to 5 life.  I feel so lucky to be a part of the Rock the Runway event, and I [...]

My 7th Look for the Fashion Show

. . . . Designer Ayanna Harrison For our 7th look in the fashion show, our challenge is to create a garment from newspaper that was sponsored by the News and Record.  I eventually decided to create a dress using cardboard to create the outer structure and, paper mâché to go over it so that I could be incorporating the newspaper.   DESIGN PROCESS My first step was to create the outer structure of the dress using cardboard and duct tape. 2.  Once the structure was complete I gathered my  materials to start the paper mâché. The flour was used [...]
