Anndrea Robinson: Why I Became a Fashion Designer

In my life, I did not know what I wanted to be when I grew up. I got asked all the time and I would always tell people I do not know, I’m just going with the flow. I thought I was going to be a professional dancer or actress when I got older, but I knew I could do something better in my life. When I was younger I use to get picked on a lot for how I looked, the way I talked, and the way I dressed.

I remember I use to come home crying every day to my mom and she gave me so many pep talks. The best thing she told me is “people are going to talk about you the rest of your life and you have to learn how to stand up for yourself”. When I got older, I changed how I look. I did my research on apparel designs and fashion designers. I would look at magazines, the internet, and books. My mom taught me how to hand-sew in high school, then I learned how to machine-sew. During the summer, I just started making clothing in a little sewing area in my bedroom at home.

The reason why I wanted to become a fashion designer because I use to be a shy person who was afraid to be myself. Now that I am older, I came out of my comfort zone by accomplishing so many goals in my life. In our society, people try to fit in cliques, but in reality all you have to do is be yourself. I wanted to make clothes that everyone can wear at affordable prices. In my shows I always use diversity, different sizes/heights, and different cultures. In my designs I express myself by letting my clothing speak for themselves by each piece telling a story.
