It’s that time of year – when we get to introduce you to the designers chosen for our 2017 Rock the Runway Fashion Fundraiser! This year, we had a large pool of very talented designers and had to go through the difficult task of choosing seven who will showcase their looks on the runway on February 24, 2017.

Sanja Grgic

Sanja Grgic

Sanja Grgic was born in Eastern Europe and raised in the former Yugoslavia. She learned to sew from her mother at a young age and was making her own outfits by the time she was a teenager. After fleeing to Germany, Sanja worked at a specialty store for sewing machines and fabrics, where she learned more about textiles and sewing. Now living in the Triad, Sanja is a student at UNC Greensboro.  Sanja describes her design aesthetic as “unconventional, contemporary, vintage.”

Lakeasha Mccrimmon

Lakeasha Mccrimmon

Lakeasha Mccrimmon has always had a passion for the arts and started drawing at a young age. She started modeling at age 14 – her first look was a full body, black leather cat suit with a long platinum blond wig! After becoming a young mother and serving in the US Army, Lakeasha says a lightbulb went off one day while she was in her closet – giving her inspiration to design. Lakeasha had never even touched a sewing machine, but turned to YouTube and Project Runway and learned to sew. She describes her aesthetic as “beauty, life and energy.”

Jessica Perry

Jessica Perry

Jessica Perry grew up in the Raleigh/Durham area and always knew she wanted to be a designer. She started sketching and creating fashion lines at age nine and began sewing around age 13. Jessica says fashion design is a great way to express herself and relieve stress. She is currently a senior in the Consumer, Apparel and Retail Studies Program at UNC Greensboro. She describes her aesthetic as “elegant, sassy, and chic.”

Anndrea Robinson

Anndrea Robinson

Anndrea Robinson is from New Jersey and now lives in Asheboro. Anndrea used to perform and dance in theater until injuring her leg. That’s when her mom taught her how to hand sew. She learned how to use a sewing machine in the 11th grade. Anndrea has been creating her own looks for about six years now. She is an appareal design major at UNC Greensboro. She decribes her aesthetic as “attitude, street and classy.”

Michelle Teague

Michelle Teague

Michelle Teague moved to North Carolina three years ago after teaching violin, viola and cello in Atlanta. She learned to sew from her grandmother, who had a seamstress shop in Wisconsin. When her music business failed to take off in North Carolina, she began to sew more. Michelle created her own gown when she couldn’t find one and realized that design was her real niche. Michelle describes her design aesthic as “whimsical, feminine and elegant.”

Florence Wallace

Florence Wallace

Florence Wallace was born in Monrovia, Liberia. Her family fled when she was three because of a civil war, and they lived as refugees in Nigeria and Ghana. She came to the US in 2000. She bought her first sewing machine during her senior year of high school and went to Goodwill and other thrift stores to buy clothing and create new looks. Florence calls her design aesthetic, “bold, classy and unique.”

Drew Waller

Drew Waller

Drew Waller got a lot of hand-me-downs as a kid and loved remaking them into more fashionable looks. All she needed was a needle and thread. She began taking sewing classes in high school and got her first sewing machine. Drew even designed her own prom dress. She is currently an Apparel Product Design major at UNC Greensboro. She says her design aesthetic is “dominant, sophisticated and adventurous.”
