Georgann Schultz: Rock The Runway Participation

Describe why you wanted to participate in ROCK THE RUNWAY.
I have known about Rock the Runway since season I, but have never been able to participate due to show commitments. I am a chronically over-committed person. I had the honor of judging another local runway show for Aids Care Services in Winston-Salem for two years and met two of the RTR alumni.  I was very impressed with their work, so I have a lot to live up to by participating in this year’s RTR.  This event is challenging me to create with a medium that I use in my designs for the stage- Goodwill treasures, and to really stretch to keep my designs fresh with an eye on the 70’s.

What has been the best part of your participation in the fashion fundraiser so far?
I’ve enjoyed taking the time to browse at local Goodwill Stores and linger over the bins at the new Outlet store on Eugene Street in Greensboro.  I’m always rushing and digging and discovering on a super tight schedule.  I am usually the person called at the last minute to come in and costume a show, so it is rush, rush and more rush!  (Let me just add, the treasures at the “pound store” are incredible!  If you haven’t been there yet, you just have to go!  You pay by the pound, not by the piece!)  I am having fun putting different vintage and modern fabrics together and coming up with something kicky, comfortable, and of course, fun!

What is the most unique piece you purchased from Triad Goodwill for your collection?
A vintage quilt topper that was never finished into a quilt.  There are amazing feed sacks from the 1930s and 1940s in this cotton quilt topper! It’s a beautiful hand stitched example of industrious housewives using what they had to make a treasure for their families  Those women sure had the Goodwill spirit, if not the stores to shop in!  Repurposing what they could find into something from their hearts!  I felt a little guilty cutting that handstitched quilt top, but wait until you see what it looks like now!
