One day, before I went to bed, an idea popped up in my mind…
I stayed up and got my sketch done in couple minutes, a strapless dress with lovely purple tone, a flare silhouette, and a horizontal zigzag neckline created by the shape of the ties. I couldn’t sleep, tried to visualize my way to construct the garment.
The next day, I went to shop at Goodwill. If I couldn’t find any dress in purple, that meant I had to change my original sketch. After two hours searching in all the sections, I found two dresses that I could combine them for the bottom of my design. Luckily, their color and finish were almost the same. Looking for the ties to make the corset was a fun journey! I went to three different Goodwill stores to select all ties in violet, purple shades. Each of them had different size, color, and print that took me a while to match them and consider how they should go together.
Materials ready!
Removing lining Placing ties and draping
When I started making this, I knew I was taking a real challenge! It was harder than I imagined. Ties were stiff because of an additional layer inside. In order to be able to sew on and make them well fitted to the body, I had to take these layers out and insert wires to shape the form. If you notice, you can see the random prints were placed symmetrically on purpose. I just love the vintage effect created from them. It was really fun to try it on myself. After this, I wanted to make myself a black tie-corset!
And…here is the final look! I’m happy with the result!
