Amber Kapas: Collection Inspiration
Describe what inspired the look for your collection?
Inspiration for the 80s came naturally for me, as this decade has always been a favorite. I grew up loving 80’s hair metal, with my parents always playing their favorite artist. My go-to inspiration would be turning on my Joan Jett Pandora station, rocking out for a bit and letting the ideas flow naturally. This collection is inspired not only from music, but a mix of The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink meets a Carrie Bradshaw vibe.
What piece(s) did you find at Triad Goodwill that will make your collection stand out?
I found a few favorites! Funny thing- the location I was shopping in had an 80’s music station playing all night so the inspiration kept flowing as I was searching for my perfect pieces. My absolute favorite piece I found would be a lace, beaded taffeta wedding gown.
What has been/ do you anticipate will be the biggest challenge in making your vision into reality?
My biggest challenge will be that I don’t sketch ideas out prior to working on them- instead, I write down words and color schemes to describe my ideas. I’ll love a sketch, create the garment, and completely want to reconstruct and redesign the piece once it’s finished, due to it not fulfilling my vision.
