Virginia Cole: Collection Inspiration

Describe what inspired the look for your collection:

My collection inspiration relates to the history of the 1940s. There was a lot happening in that decade, however, I decided to mix war and glamour. The effects of war influenced the silhouette of the era, and when it was over, the “New Look” by Christian Dior gave new life to the world of fashion.

What piece(s) did you find at Triad Goodwill that will make your collection stand out?

There were many fabulous choices at Goodwill. I kept reminding myself that I was shopping specifically for the contest. Of the items I bought, the ones that stand out the most in my mind were a men’s trench coat lined with faux fur, and a curtain with a small diagonal print. Both pieces were so interesting, I started planning them immediately! After seeing the construction of the coat, I believe it was moderately priced in its previous life since it was not a simple task taking it apart. Placement of the deconstructed fabric rendered a very interesting outcome.

What has been / do you anticipate will be the biggest challenge in making your vision into reality?

I anticipate the biggest challenge for me is to remain inside the parameters of the 1940s while creating something different. My actual design processes are naturally leaning towards punk… but I am trying to remain reserved. Most audiences tend to go for huge looks and big gowns…however, to remain true to the decade one should keep in mind the fabric restrictions from war, the hemlines, and of course the leading silhouettes of the era. But, to stay true to myself, elements of punk will more than likely appear! I am certain it will work out just fine.
