In this blog I will briefly discuss my design process and help you to understand how I communicate my vision as a designer. The first thing I do when designing a collection is think about the different inspirations or points of reference that I want to encompass within the collection. I usually find inspiration in nature, historical periods, and science fiction. I like the idea of super natural existences including aliens, killer plants, and even mermaids. I think about ways to interpret these creatures through fabric choices and design details to create characters with super natural feminine qualities. Next, I think about the model who will make the presentation of my idea come to life. I am adamant about finding the fiercest models to strut on that runway and put on a show when I show my garments! “Fierce” is the name of the game and whether it’s a facade or a real life attitude, if you’re one of my models, you better work that outfit!
Next, I began sketching the design with the model in mind. I think people forget that there are different interpretations of what is ‘fierce’ and what is beautiful and that not every interpretation should be compared to the next. This is why each of my models represent a different interpretation of beauty including; different complexions, body types, and heights. It’s important to appeal to a variety of consumers and I never want my brand to seem insensitive towards variety and diversity in beauty. That’s not who I am and that is not what I want to represent. It’s the differences that interest me, commonalities are boring and I prefer the spice of life. I need to be excited and wowed by my garment when seeing it walk the runway and I like for the audience to be affected in the same way.
I’ve been recently realizing how much time and fun will go into working on my collection for the Rock the Runway Fashion Show. Last year there were a variety of design aesthetics represented and I’m trying to decide the best way to present my own aesthetic through re-crafted designs. Typically I like structural, yet feminine silhouettes so “form” and “fitting” are my middle names. You can expect to see something in that category from my collection in the 2015 show for sure!
