As many already know, I chose to draw inspiration from my native New York roots. Harlem located in Manhattan’s upper east side, was the birthing place of the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920’s. This period in history was marked by an explosion of literature, arts, and self expression in African American culture.
Although I wasn’t born in the 1920’s (laughs), the Harlem community is still very rich in culture, art expression and music. Modern day nightlife boasts dozens of posh restaurants with excellent cuisine, lounges to enjoy poetry and music, and a community now so diverse it only adds to the flair, beauty and uniqueness of Harlem.
My color palette for this collection will be infused with rich purples, blues, and reds which are reminiscent of the Harlem Renaissance and modern day NY nightlife.
I’ve already begun building my collection and I’m so excited about the opportunity to showcase my interpretation of ”Harlem Nights” in a re-crafted design challenge for Goodwill’s Rock the Runway Show in February 2015. Hold onto your seats, we’re going to have a fabulous time!
